Approximately 370 students turned out last Thursday to vote for their 2010-2011 class presidents

Approximately 370 students turned out last Thursday to vote for their 2010-2011 class presidents , the students who will represent them next year on the Diplomatic Congress, F&M’s student government organization. The Diplomatic Congress serves as a forum between various campus leaders and groups as well as a liaison with the College administration.

“We had a record turnout for all class years,” said current Diplomatic Congress president Hormuz Masani ’10. “I am incredibly pleased with the number of students that voted.”

For the rising sophomore class, 132 students voted, and Michael Thomas ’13 won with 87 votes against Michael Landolfi ’13.

“I feel honored to be elected president of the sophomore class,” Thomas said. “I feel like I have gained the trust and respect of my class to lead them through next year.”

Thomas’s goals include planning more class-specific events and bringing another concert to campus next year similar to the upcoming performance by Sam Adams.

“I want to figure out problems and suggest real and effective solutions to those problems,” Thomas said. “I hope to make life for all F&M students more pleasant and more fun.”

Of the 126 rising juniors who voted, 58 selected Juan Pablo Pitarque ’12 as their class president, giving him the victory over Scott Salmon ’12 and Yun Chen ’12. Pitarque expressed that, at first, he was hesitant to run for the position, but now he is ready.

“I hope to bring in new ideas that we can work with to plan events that will unify the student body and the administration,” Pitarque said. “My previous experience as class president in high school and current experience in leadership positions of clubs here on campus has also taught me multiple elements I believe will positively contribute to the Diplomatic Congress.”

Shahnaz Hanna ’11, will represent the senior class after garnering 72 of the 113 votes cast. Other candidates were Bobby Pokora ’11, Sam Ruchlewicz ’11, and current junior class president Winston Bowen ’11.

Hanna hopes to improve senior nights and raise awareness about the opportunities available to seniors, such as Career Services, that can help with their plans for after graduation. Additionally, she envisions a more cohesive Congress.

“I would like to continue the communication that the Diplomatic Congress has brought among all the clubs on campus,” Hanna said. “From my time working as Chancellor of Bonchek [College House], I saw that the Diplomatic Congress encouraged the four houses to work together on various projects. I hope to open this communication up to include all clubs on campus.”

Although the current class leaders —Jordan Stuhltrager ’13, Elena Lopez ’12, Bowen, and Lane Bodian ’10—may be moving on, Masani is confident that next year’s Congress will be successful.

“The new class presidents bring a fresh perspective to the Diplomatic Congress,” Masani said. “I have personally interacted with all of them and I am excited for the enthusiasm and energy they will bring.”
