In the first game of the season, the women’s basketball team fell short in an exciting matchup against York College this Saturday in the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament.

With a final score of 57-50, F&M showed a strong effort against the Spartans, an NCAA tournament team from last year, which includes four returning starters.

The Diplomats’ starters consisted of Kristina McCarthy ’14, Elizabeth Snyder ’13 and Alexa Barbush ’13, and Megan Pauley ’12 and Allison Bauer ’12. Returning guards Barbush and Snyder powered the Diplomats’ offense, combining for 32 of F&M’s 50 points.  Barbush dropped a game-high 21 points to go along with nine steals, while Snyder reached double figures with 11 points.

York went on top early with a first half that included a 10-0 run with 12:20 remaining in the period, but the Diplomats got back in the game with a pair of free throws from Barbush. F&M trailed at the half, but battled to cut the lead to three with 6:20 left in the game.

Forward Emma Lisle ’14 came through with a clutch free throw, cutting the lead to two with 5:18 left on the clock. The Diplomats continued their attack with a full-court press, leading to a York turnover and foul and sending Barbush to the line. Barbush tied the game at 48 with 4:56 to go, but the Spartans came down the court and hit a quick three-pointer to regain the lead.

Snyder responded by hitting two free throws to cut the lead back to one, but the Spartans sealed the game with a defensive stop and back-to-back layups. F&M displayed a strong defensive effort throughout the game, forcing 28 turnovers, but struggled offensively, shooting just 24.6% from the field, including 3-17 from beyond the arc.

“We rushed our shots and we’ll work on that,” said second-year head coach Kirsten Richter. “I was pleased with the effort and energy the team showed, particularly on the defensive end.”

Richter is optimistic about the season, as the Dips look to improve on last year’s record of 14-13.  Richter said the team will continue working on execution. F&M will return to action Tuesday night as the Dips travel to Bryn Mawr for their first Centennial Conference matchup of the season.
