A new era has begun for the squash programs with the beginning of the tenure of new head coach Gavin Jones.

Jones will be the eighth coach in the history of the men’s squash program and the sixth coach in the history of the women’s squash program. Jones himself was once ranked 37th on the Dunlop/Professional Squash Association World Rankings during his career, which is a clear indication that Jones is the right fit for the job.

Jones was also the Welsh national champion in 2005 and 2006. In addition, Jones was a silver medalist at the 1999 World Team Championships, won five bronze medals in the European Team Championships, and had 70 caps for the country of Wales.

Jones is a perfect fit for the F&M community because he has over 20 years of squash playing and coaching experience. Before coming to F&M he coached at Harriton-Lower Merion public school, which has the largest squash program in the United States.

This season the expectations are high, as both the F&M squash teams have tons of potential with help from Jones.

Fitness, in Jones’ mind, is a major element to winning. Jones points out one of the key improvements both the men and women’s teams need to make is their fitness levels. He believes that when the fitness level is just right, anything is possible for both teams.

“Both teams had to work on fitness,” Jones said. “They have worked very hard and are now very fit and raring to go for the start of the season.”

Both the women’s and men’s teams kicked off their 2011-2012 schedules Saturday against Princeton University.

The women’s team lost to Princeton by a score of 9-0, and the men’s squash team lost to Princeton by a score of 7-2.

“This season, we are looking to finish in the top eight in the country and maybe upset a few teams along the way,” Jones said in regard to the men’s team.

However, since Jones is a first-year coach, he has a lot to learn from the players.  There are also a large number of new steps Jones is taking to improve the team.

“Being a first-year coach, I just want to put my stamp on the team,” Jones said. “Work hard, play hard, and have fun together. Fitness is a big key and that is something that both teams have improved on.”

Both the men and women’s teams will return to the court against Bates College and Yale University Saturday, Dec. 3.
